The CALM Green 520nm Bulb (E14) by CHIRYŌ Light Therapy
The Calm Green 520nm Bulb E14 small screw fitting is commonly found in bedside lamps, wall sconces, decorative table lamps, and small accent fittings.
This bulb screws into those fittings and emits a precise narrowband 520nm green light – the exact wavelength used in the Arizona and Harvard research.
Blue light content is just 1.5% – far below standard household lighting (25-35%) and office lighting (around 45%), both of which are common migraine triggers.
At 5W and 300 lumens, it’s bright enough to read, write, and move around the house by – particularly suited to bedside use, lower-stimulation evenings, and migraine recovery spaces.
The Clinical Findings of LED Green 520nm Lighting
In a 10-week clinical study, participants used narrowband 520nm Green Light exposure as part of their migraine management. Across the group:
- Headache days per month reduced by approximately 60% on average
- 86% of episodic migraine sufferers reported over 50% reduction in headache days
- 63% of chronic migraine sufferers reported over 50% reduction in headache days
- Participants also reported reduced photophobia, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety

Q. Are all green light bulbs the same?
A. No. Most “green” bulbs on the market are tinted, coated, or colour-mixed, which means they still contain blue and other wavelengths that can make migraines worse. Our CALM Green is true narrowband 520nm – the precise wavelength used in the migraine research – with the lowest possible blue content and zero flicker.
Why Green Light 520nm Narrowband, and not Amber or Red, for Migraine and Headache Sufferers
If you suffer from migraines or chronic headaches, you’ve probably already realised that most lighting makes things worse. What’s less well known is that the colour of the light matters.
Migraine researchers including Dr Mohab Ibrahim (University of Arizona) and Professor Rami Burstein (Harvard Medical School) identified a specific neurological pathway – the retino-thalamo-cortical pathway – that connects vision directly to the brain circuits that produce migraine pain.
Through this pathway, narrow bands of blue light and narrow bands of red light both activate the photoreceptor cones (short- and long-wavelength cones respectively) that worsen headache. Narrowband green light at 520 ± 10nm activates a different set of cones (medium-wavelength) that ameliorate it.
In plain English: blue light triggers migraine. Red light also triggers migraine. Only narrowband green light has been shown to reduce it.
That’s why this lamp exists, and why it isn’t part of our Healthy Lighting ranges. Amber and red lighting are excellent for general healthy evening lighting and sleep, but for someone experiencing active head pain, they can be triggers rather than relief.
Q. Is this a medical device?
A. No. The CALM Green Light bulb range is general household lighting, designed to support people whose head pain is triggered or worsened by standard lighting. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace any medication or clinical advice. For ongoing migraine management, please speak with your GP or neurologist.
Q. How does the E14 bulb differ from the E27 and B22 versions?
A. The light output (narrowband 520nm, 1.5% blue) is the same. The difference is brightness and fitting:
- E14 round (5W, 300 lumens) small round bulb, brighter than the candle, suited to bedside lamps and small fittings
- E14 candle (3W, 180 lumens) small candle-shaped bulb, softer glow, suited to chandeliers, wall sconces, and decorative fittings
- E27 (7W, 420 lumens) large screw fitting, suited to ceiling lights and main room lighting
- B22 (7W, 420 lumens) bayonet cap, the traditional UK fitting found in many older homes
Q. How long does it take to see results?
A. The Arizona research protocol involved daily exposure to narrowband green light for around 10 weeks. Some people notice immediate relief during an active migraine; the reduction in attack frequency tends to build over weeks of regular use.
