How a Biotechnology Researcher Is Using Our 520nm Green Lamp for Fluorescence Imaging

A biotechnology researcher told us they are using our lamp for fluorescence imaging….. down the rabbit hole we go 🐇 

The lamp in question was our CHIRYŌ Light Therapy CALM Green 520nm Gooseneck Lamp. When we created our CALM Green lamp, we designed it primarily for people looking for a gentle green light environment at home, during migraines and headache episodes.

What we didn’t expect was a customer from the biotechnology sector contacting us to say they were successfully using it for fluorescence imaging.

Their google review stated:

“Great! We actually use the green light for imaging the DsRed fluorescent protein in Arabidopsis seeds and it works great for that.”

As a company focused on healthy lighting and photobiomodulation, this wasn’t an application we had ever considered. Naturally, we were intrigued.

What is DsRed?

DsRed is a red fluorescent protein originally derived from coral and commonly used in biological research. Scientists use it as a visual marker because it emits red fluorescence when illuminated under suitable conditions.

What Is Fluorescence Imaging?

Fluorescence imaging is widely used in biological and agricultural research. Scientists introduce fluorescent proteins or dyes into cells, tissues or plants and then illuminate them using specific wavelengths of light.

When excited by the correct wavelength, the fluorescent marker emits light that can be observed or photographed.

This technique is commonly used in:

  • Plant research
  • Cell biology
  • Genetic engineering
  • Agricultural biotechnology
  • University laboratories
  • Medical research

Why Was a 520nm Green Light Used for DsRed fluorescent protein?

The customer explained they were imaging DsRed fluorescent protein in Arabidopsis seeds.

DsRed is a red fluorescent protein commonly used in biological research as a visual marker.

Certain fluorescent proteins respond best when illuminated by specific wavelengths of light, which is why laboratories often use dedicated excitation light sources.

Our customer found that the green wavelength produced by the lamp worked well within their imaging setup.

Whilst we cannot comment on the technical suitability of our CALM Green 520nm lamp for fluorescence imaging, the researcher reported successful results when using the 520nm wavelength within their experimental setup.

An Unexpected Application

We designed our green lamp for healthy lighting applications rather than scientific research.

However, this feedback highlights how specialised wavelengths can sometimes find uses beyond their original intended purpose.

Whilst we cannot guarantee suitability for laboratory applications, it is fascinating to hear how customers are using green light technology in innovative ways.

Why Cost Matters in Research

Research budgets are often limited, particularly within universities, schools and independent projects.

Professional fluorescence imaging equipment can represent a significant investment.

Our customer reported achieving results suitable for their application while using a device costing substantially less than traditional alternatives.

Could Green Light Have Other Research Applications?

Possibly.

As photobiomodulation, light therapy and wavelength-specific lighting continue to gain attention, researchers are constantly exploring new applications for different parts of the visible spectrum.
